U.S. Passport Card Application Guide
DownloadThe new Passport Card is now available to citizens of the United States. The U.S. Passport Card fulfils new border travel requirements. It expedites land and sea border crossings between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. The Passport Card acts as a U.S. Passport but is more compact and lighter in card form. The Passport Card serves as proof of identity and U.S. citizen. A regular U.S. passport is the only valid document that can be used for international air travel.
Passport card applications became available in February 2008, and production started in July 2008. After the Department of State has received the application, it takes about three weeks for applicants who are eligible to receive their Passport Cards.
