B-2 Visa to Receive Medical Treatment

B-2 Visas can also be issued to people who are visiting the United States for medical treatment. Although the application process is the same as for a Tourist Visa, there are additional documents required to prove that the applicant is eligible to receive the visa. The B-2 Tourist Visa Application guide outlines the requirements and the application process.

The length of a Tourist Visa

A B-2 Tourist Visa is usually granted for a six-month stay to American citizens. Visitors visa holders can stay up to 6 months. Each visitor’s stay in the country is determined by the immigration officer at the entry point. The majority of visitors are allowed to stay for six months on their I-94 cards. However, the immigration officer can issue shorter stays on a case-by-case basis. The right of a foreign visitor to request an extension of their stay is available upon entry to the United States.

Change of status for US visitor visa applications

B-2 Tourist Visa holders are usually eligible to become permanent residents (Green Card holders), if they meet the requirements or to another nonimmigrant status such as temporary worker (H-1B/H-2B, E-1/E-2, E-3, E-3). Students (under the F-1 Student Visa) or permanent United States residents (Green Card). The Visa Waiver Program does not allow individuals to change their status. Nonimmigrant visas such as the B-2 Tourist Visa offer the advantage of being able to change your status.
